3. Scuola SIDRA 2012

Cari Colleghi,

Cari saluti a tutti,

Claudio Melchiorri, Elena Valcher

5. Postdoc position available

The Department of Engineering for Innovation (www.dii.unile.it) at the Università del Salento, Lecce, Italy, offers one postdoctoral position in the area of agricultural robotics.

This position is funded for 1 year (+ six months) with a scholarship of 1350 EUR per month (after taxation).

Project description: “Ambient Awareness for Autonomous Agricultural Vehicles (QUAD-AV)”, funded through ERA-Net ICT-AGRI action within the 7FP (http://www.quad-av.eu/).

Autonomous vehicles are being increasingly adopted in agriculture to improve productivity and efficiency. For an autonomous agricultural vehicle to operate safely, environment perception and interpretation capabilities are fundamental requirements. The project will focus on the development of sensors and sensor processing methods to provide an autonomous agricultural vehicle with such ambient awareness. The “obstacle detection” problem will be specifically addressed. The idea is that of using different sensor modalities and multi-algorithm approaches to detect the various kinds of obstacles. The potential of four sensor technologies: (stereo) vision, radar, ladar and thermography will be investigated.

For further information, please contact Dr. Giulio Reina (giulio.reina@unisalento.it).

Requirements:

Students with a master’s degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics are invited to apply for admission. A background in robotic sensing, and specifically in (stereo) computer vision is important. A PhD in a topic related with the project is preferable.

Application:

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Giulio Reina (giulio.reina@unisalento.it) including their CV.

Closing date:

Applications should be sent as soon as possible, with deadline set to  February 29th, 2012.

10. Third International Summer School on Screw-Theory Based Methods in Robotics

1 -- 9 September 2012

University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy

http://www.summerscrews.org

For its third edition, Summer Screws returns to the University
of Genoa. The high attendance and the enthusiastic feedback
from the first event in Genoa and the second in Shanghai
confirmed that this initiative provides a service that the
robotics community needs and values.

Summer Screws 2012 will gather six experts in the robotics
applications of screw theory, and up to 40 participants, at the
University of Genoa during the first week of September. The
summer school will teach attendees how to apply existing
methods and empower them to develop new ones in their own
research. The basic theoretical notions will be introduced in a
rigorous manner, with emphasis on examples, applications, and
exercises.
