1. Adesione cena I-RAS

2. I-RAS chapter grant

Vi annuncio con soddisfazione che e' stata accolta la richiesta inoltrata alla RAS per finanziare la produzione di un video divulgativo I-RAS.

L'idea e' quella di produrre un video di breve durata, in Italiano, che illustri le attivita' portate avanti dalla nostra comunita' ad un pubblico di studenti di scuole superiori.

3. Postdoc opening - Machine Learning for Robot Control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles - Italian Institute of Technology

The Department of Advanced Robotics (http://www.iit.it/en/advanced-robotics) at the Italian Institute of Technology (an English-language research institute, located in Genoa, Italy) has one Post-Doc opening in the research areas of Reinforcement learning and Imitation learning applied to robot control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV).

The successful candidates will participate in a 3-year research project funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7-ICT, STREP, Cognitive Systems and Robotics) called "PANDORA" (Persistent Autonomy through learNing, aDaptation, Observation and ReplAnning) which started in January 2012. The project is a collaboration of five universities and institutes in Europe: Heriot Watt University (UK), Italian Institute of Technology (Italy), University of Girona (Spain), King's College London (UK), and National Technical University of Athens (Greece).

The accepted candidates will contribute to the development and experimental validation of novel reinforcement learning and imitation learning algorithms for specific application to robot control of autonomous underwater vehicles.

The research work includes conducting experiment with AUVs in water tanks in collaboration with the other project partners. The developed machine learning algorithms will also be applied for other robots available at IIT, such as the compliant humanoid robot COMAN, the humanoid robot iCub, Barrett WAM manipulator arm, and KUKA LWR arm robot.

The research will be conducted within the "Learning and Interaction Group" (http://www.iit.it/en/advr-labs/learning-and-interaction) with team leaders: Dr. Petar Kormushev and Dr. Sylvain Calinon.

The salary will depend on the candidate's experience. Policies provide additional pension and health benefits. Applicants may also qualify for reduced taxes benefits. The contract will be for the duration of the project.
Expected starting date is as soon as possible.

- PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering
- High-quality publication record
- Strong interest in machine learning algorithms
- Strong competencies in some of these areas: machine learning, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, MATLAB and C/C++ programming
- Experience in robot control is a plus
- Fluency in both spoken and written English

4. Postdoc a IMT Lucca

Post-Doc: IMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy

The Dynamical Systems, Control and Optimization group  (http://dysco.lab.imtlucca.it/) of the IMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca (Italy) is seeking candidates for a post-doctoral position within the framework of the new project EFFINET "Efficient Integrated Real-time Monitoring and Control of Drinking Water Networks" funded by the European Commission. The applicant is required to have a strong control-theoretical background, expertise in optimization (theory and algorithms) and optimization-based control, and strong skills in computer programming (preferably MATLAB). Experience with power systems, energy markets and/or water networks will be considered as a plus (although it is not required). Candidates must have an excellent track record of high-impact scientific research and an excellent level of both written and spoken English is mandatory.

The main tasks of the successful candidate will be to formulate models and devise efficient stochastic Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms for real-time operational control of drinking water networks. Apart from the duties within the project, the successful candidate will conduct research in collaboration with the researchers and PhD students of the group in topics such as real-time and distributed optimization and stochastic MPC. Other activities include tutorship and mentoring of Ph.D. students and participation in the development of the research activities of the Institute.

Appointment compensation packages will depend on the candidate, but are competitive on an international level.

6. PhD course on Model Predictive Control

Nell'ambito del dottorato in "Computer, Decision, and Systems Science" di IMT Lucca (http://www.imtlucca.it/phd), dal 2 al 10 luglio 2012 il prof. Alberto Bemporad terrà un corso di "Model Predictive Control".

7. Call for PhD positions in Biorobotics at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna/Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - Italy

The Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa (Italy) issued a call for application to a Ph.D. program in BIOROBOTICS – for research projects in MICRO-BIOROBOTICS, which is in the framework of the existing Innovative Technologies of Information & Communication Engineering and Robotics International School of Doctorate.

The fellowships will be funded by the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (www.iit.it<http://www.iit.it>) to foster research in MICRO-BIOROBOTICS specifically to be carried out at the Center in Micro-Biorobotics@SSSA (http://mbr.iit.it) pursuing the following scientific goals within two main platforms:
1) The MICROROBOTICS PLATFORM: soft robotics, bioinspired robots, bio-hybrid robots, biomedical robots;
2) The SMART MATERIALS PLATFORM: smart polymers, polymeric nanofilms, nanomaterials and smart biointerfaces.

Fellows will conduct research in a leading international institution and within a highly interdisciplinary environment. Interested candidates must prepare a research project relative to the MICRO-BIOROBOTICS field which will be evaluated for scientific and technical soundness and will be part of the whole evaluation process.

8. Elezioni 2013 IEEE Vice President-Elect for Technical Activities

quest'anno eleggeremo il 2013 IEEE Vice President-Elect for Technical Activities, che diventera' Vice President for Technical Activities nel 2014.
Questo e' un ruolo critico per l'evoluzione e l'espansione della presenza della IEEE nel panorama mondiale. L'attenzione agli aspetti tecnici e' importante cosi' come la comprensione e la cura per le nostre comunita' globalizzate, includenti ricercatori, professionisti, dipendenti governativi e studenti. Un'attitudine positiva e vivace e' essenziale per promuovere la collaborazione e sfruttare le sinergie nella IEEE. Per svolgere questo compito sono necessarie ottime conoscenza della IEEE e capacita' di coordinamento.

Desidero pertanto raccomandarvi di considerare Vincenzo Piuri per questa posizione. Ha una lunga esperienza in IEEE, soprattutto a livello dell'IEEE Board of Directors.
