1. Adesione cena I-RAS

Cari colleghi,

2. I-RAS chapter grant

Scuola di Robotica è diventata partner della First Lego League (FLL) e sede di gare e eventi per il Nord Ovest.

La FLL è un evento mondiale con milioni di ragazze e ragazzi (dai 9 ai 16 anni) coinvolti in tutto il mondo, con esperimenti e progetti scientifici.

5. OPENING IN AERIAL ROBOTICS at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio

Robotics Research Group of the DIEI at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, Cassino (FR), Italy

The Robotics Research Group of the DIEI at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio has opened a call to recruit one postdoctoral research fellow in the field of Aerial Robotics. His research will involve experimental activity on the aerial robotic system available at the University of Cassino and collaboration with several leading European robotics research groups working on the EU FP7 Integrating Project "Aerial Robotics Cooperative Assembly System" (ARCAS).

We are looking for highly-motivated young scientist candidates with a background and PhD in Robotics and Control Engineering and a well-established publication record in the field of Aerial Robotics and in one or more of the following areas:
- Industrial robot manipulators;
- Autonomous robots;
- Cooperative control of mobile robots;
- Visual control.
Programming skills (e.g., strong experience in C/C++ and MATLAB) are essential. The specific research program will be defined based on the interests and abilities of the successful candidate.

The position is full time and paid according to the current Italian regulations (about 1300 Euro per month). The initial contract is for a two- year position that might be extended of one more year.

6. 2 funded PhD positions open at PERCRO Lab. of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa - Italy

The following funded 3-year PhD positions are opened at PERCRO Laboratory of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa (http://www.percro.org/) in Italy:
 
1) one position in “Polymeric Energy Converters”
The selected candidate will work on the development of new power electronics solutions and control architectures for renewable electricity generators based on electrostrictive elastomers.
Expected applicants should hold:
  - a degree in electrical or electronics engineering;
  - possibly a specialization in power electronics;
 
2) one position in “Computational fluid-structure interaction”
The selected candidate will work on the development of finite element and boundary element models for the study of the coupled behavior of fluids and hyper-elastic materials.
Expected applicants should hold:
  - a degree in either mechanical/naval/aerospace/civil engineering, or applied mathematics and physics;
  - possibly a specialization in computational mechanics;
 
The candidates should also possess:
  - strong theoretical and practical skills.
  - good speaking and writing English proficiency.

The PhD activities will be performed at European level in the context of recently funded FP7 projects.
The call is open to interested doctoral candidates from all countries (Europe and beyond).
 
DEADLINE for application is August 25, 2012
The application process is highly competitive and the selected fellows will conduct research in a leading international institution where research is addressed with an interdisciplinary approach.

The selected PhD students will be responsible of carrying out an individual research project and are also offered advanced courses in their research fields. The PhD students will use excellent facilities, equipped with state-of-the-art instruments; they will carry on their individual research projects under the active tutorship of professors and researchers; they will be part of an interdisciplinary research team comprising more than 80 senior and junior researchers and students; they will work in contact with a network of international partners and will actively take part in a number of other international projects; they will have the possibility of spending a research period in a foreign institution.
The fellowships for the selected students are € 14.500 per year plus free meals.

8. Il Prof. Alberto Broggi premiato dal Royal Institute of Navigation di Londra

Al ricercatore dell’Ateneo emiliano un ‘certificate of achievement’ per la ricerca nel campo della navigazione e guida autonoma

Londra, 11 luglio 2012 --- Nuovo riconoscimento per il lavoro di ricerca svolto dal gruppo del VisLab ed in particolare dal Prof. Alberto Broggi. Il premio è stato consegnato al docente dell’Ateneo Parmense il giorno 11 luglio, presso la Royal Geographical Society di Londra, durante l’incontro annuale del Royal Institute of Navigation.
Ogni anno il Royal Institute of Navigation, diretto da Peter Chapman-Andrews, seleziona persone distintasi a livello internazionale nel campo della navigazione; in particolare le motivazioni del premio di quest’anno citano i numerosi successi che sono stati raggiunti dal professore e dal suo gruppo di ricerca VisLab negli ultimi anni, contribuendo a scrivere la storia della robotica veicolare:
In segno di riconoscimeno per gli importanti risultati nello sviluppo di sistemi di percezione, che uniscono l’elaborazione e l’interpretazione delle immagini, l’intelligenza artificiale, e la navigazione e la guida.
Tra i tanti progetti portati a termine dal gruppo del VisLab citiamo il test di veicoli a guida automatica VIAC – www.viac.vislab.it: quattro veicoli elettrici equipaggiati per la navigazione senza guidatore hanno percorso nel 2010 oltre 13.000 km da Parma a Shanghai affrontando situazioni di guida reali e talvolta estreme. Notato anche dal colosso informatico Google, presso la sede del quale il direttore del VisLab è stato invitato a presentare le tecniche e le tecnologie sviluppate per il raggiungimento di un obiettivo così ambizioso, il test rimane ad oggi il più esteso a navigazione autonoma mai effettuato.

9. Open PhD positions for the HyQ project at the Italian Inst. of Tech.

The Department of Advanced Robotics ( http://www.iit.it/en/advanced-robotics.html ) at the Italian Institute of Technology IIT (an English language Institute) placed in Genoa, is seeking to appoint several well-motivated PhD students who will be involved in the *HyQ project* that aims to develop *versatile all-terrain legged robots*. The positions are fully funded, start in January 2013 and typically lasts 3 years.

The Hydraulic Quadruped HyQ is a unique research platform. It is a fully torque controlled hydraulic/electric quadruped robot equipped with inertial measurement units, laser range finders and stereo cameras. HyQ is able to perform highly dynamic motions like jumping and running, as well as careful navigation over rough terrain.

The following research topics are available:

1) *Control and planning of autonomous dynamic legged robot locomotion*
Possible research topics include but are not limited to: Control of floating base articulated robots, kino-dynamic planning, probabilistic planning & control, force & impedance control, learning and adaptive control of legged robots, dynamic terrain and obstacle perception and modeling, path planning.

2) *Perception and mapping on a quadruped robot*
Possible research topics will include methods to optimally acquire and fuse information from the robot sensors, to build a simple but accurate map of its surroundings, and to produce meaningful task specifications. The perception process will be tightly coupled with the control and planning subsystems of highly dynamic motion tasks.

3) *Design and control of manipulator arms for a quadruped robot*
This topic includes the development of a pair of hydraulically actuated manipulator arms to be mounted onto the HyQ robot. The arms will be used for picking up and manipulating objects, opening doors, moving obstacles and providing additional support to assist moving over very difficult terrain. Concurrently, the candidate will work on control and manipulation aspects related to the arms and the full robot.

The ideal candidates have an excellent background in Robotics, Motion Planning, Control Engineering, Dynamical Systems or similar fields. Excellent programming skills are a prerequisite for topic 1 and 2. Excellent mechanical design skills are a prerequisite for topic 3. It is furthermore desired that the student has a practical flair and a desire to do experimental work. The work will require elements of theoretical work, software implementation and field tests. The ability to collaborate across and beyond disciplines is a key to success in this research program. Furthermore, the candidates should be goal-oriented and know how to work independently as well as in a team.
