Politecnico di Milano (Italy), Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB), Neuroengineering and Medical Robotics Laboratory - NearLab (www.nearlab.polimi.it ) is recruiting a Post doc for carrying out research in the field of

''Sensors and technologies for surgical robotics''

in the frame of the EU FP7 ACTIVE project (www.active-fp7.eu) for 18 months.

The Nearlab includes 4 faculties, 4 post docs and 7 PhD students working on technologies for surgery and rehabilitation. The Department of Advanced Robotics at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is seeking to appoint well motivated full-time junior/senior postdoctoral research fellows on the areas of mechanical design and control of new humanoid platforms. The postdoctoral fellows will join an interdisciplinary team and pursue research in partnership within a consortium of leading universities and research institutes in Europe on the new European Commission funded project WALK-MAN. This recently started project aims to perform fundamental advancement in humanoid design and control and eventually enable humanoids to operate outside the laboratory cages in more unstructured workspaces demonstrating high tolerance and robustness under strong physical interactions with the surrounding environment.

We are looking for outstanding and highly motivated young scientist with a background and PhD in Robotics, Mechanical or Control Engineering and an excellent, well established publication record on mechanical design and/or control of humanoid robots. Previous experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

Locomotion and trajectory generation for legged robots.
Whole body control, balance and push recovery stabilizers.
Design of articulated legged systems articulated arms, end effectors and hands.
Control of compliant robots and actuation.

Proficiency in hardware design and/or strong competences in humanoid robot control and excellent hands-on practical skills are essential. International applications are encouraged. The successful candidate will be offered a project collaboration contract (fixed term) for two years, with a highly competitive salary which will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Openings for Mechanical / Robotics Engineers

The Humanoid & Human Centred Mechatronics Lab of the Department of Advanced Robotics at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) an English-language research Institute placed in Genoa, Italy, is seeking to appoint highly motivated skilled and enthusiastic Mechanical Engineers with an excellent, well established record in designing, building and analysing robotics systems with highly customised sensing and actuation, and clever, functional, and aesthetic mechanical devices.

Position overview

Specific responsibilities of the job would include the following:

* Design and optimise 3D/2D models of robot parts and assemblies.

* Develop, robot prototype, assemble and physically test novel customised designs.

* Interact with workshops and evaluate manufacturers and suppliers of nonstandard parts.

* Generate detailed technical documentation for 3D/2D assembly and parts manufacturing.

* Troubleshoot mechanical issues.

* Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (electronics, software) to ensure the successful integration of their designs with the rest of the system.

The ideal candidate should possess a Mechanical Engineer degree and be able to demonstrate:

Proficiency in hardware design and mechanism analysis with a proven portfolio of practical designs and excellent hands-on practical skills.

Excellent knowledge of design software tools (primarily with Pro Engineer, ANSYS, other relevant also welcome) is a must. The position is open for immediate starting.

The European Conference on Modeling and Simulation (ECMS) is the annual
conference of the European Council for Modeling and Simulation, an
independent forum of European academics and practitioners dedicated to
research, development, and applications of modeling and simulation. The ECMS
2014 is hosted by the Department of Economics and Management of the
University of Brescia, Italy. ECMS2014 is dedicated to help define the state
of the art in different fields involved in creating, defining and building
innovative simulation systems, simulation and modeling tools and techniques,
and novel applications for modeling and simulation. Prospective authors are
invited to submit high-quality papers representing original results in all
related areas of modeling and simulation. High quality selected papers will
be considered for publication in a focused issue with some international
journals. An author of each accepted paper must register and present the

The Modeling and Simulation in Robotic Applications track is intended to
offer a forum for people interested in modeling and simulation of robotic
systems and their environments. Modeling and simulation are fundamental for
design, implementation, training, and evaluation of robotic systems, their
environments, and their operators. Robotic systems are complex, dynamic,
multi-model systems posing multiple challenges to the modeler. Evaluation of
robotic system performance is complex due to the inherent interaction
between robotic system operation and the environment. Testing robotic system
performance in a physical environment can be both costly and dangerous.
Simulations are an important tool for robotic system evaluation augmenting
and replacing physical tests. More and more robotic systems are integrated
in dynamic, unstructured environments assigned to tasks that necessitate
close cooperation with human operators. With such tasks modeling and
simulation of robot operation becomes crucial for maintaining system
performance and safety. As the interaction between the human operator and
robot increasingly resembles that of co-workers rather than a master and a
slave, models and real-time simulations are imperative for facilitating
joint appreciation of the capabilities of each entity.

Subjects of this track include but are not limited to:

Modeling and simulation for robotic system design
Modeling and simulation for evaluation of robot performance
Modeling and simulation of robotic environments and applications such as:
industrial, domestic, search and rescue, agriculture
Modeling and simulation of shared human-robot tasks and capabilities

x. IAS Conference in 2014: Early Call for Papers

The 13th International Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems - 2014

Recent results confirm that robots, machines and systems are rapidly achieving intelligence and autonomy, mastering increasing capabilities in mobility and manipulation, sensing and perception, reasoning and decision making. The Series of International Conferences on Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS) founded in 1986 is one of the major events summarizing this trend. The aim of the 13th International Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems is to further witness the development of these technologies and to foster their adoptions in the industrial sector.

The 13th IAS invites researchers, engineers and experts to submit high quality papers to disseminate, to share and to fruitfully discuss their last achievements and results. IAS will provide forum and workshops where participants could exchange their ideas and experiences in the research and industrial fields through high quality peer reviewed papers.

After the successful IAS-12 Conference held in Korea with more than 300 participants, the 13th IAS will be held in Italy in July 2014.

The main sessions of the 13th IAS Conference and Workshop will be held in the historical city of Padua, from July 15 to July 18, 2014, in one of the oldest universities in the world. The venue will be the beautiful Padua Conference Center and participants will enjoy an exciting social program. From the evening of July 18 till the evening of July 19 a Post-Conference Workshop celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Foundation of IAS-Society will be held in Venice city, at Telecom Italia Future Center, close to Rialto Bridge. On Saturday 19, Participants join a wonderful social event in the Special Fireworks Night of Venetian "Feast of the Redeemer".

The organizing committee invites you to submit high quality papers, propose a workshop, organize a tutorial, participate in the conference and enjoy the rich cultural environment, the exciting social events and the beautiful locations of Padova and Venice.
