The 1st Biannual Summer School on Control of Surgical Robots (COSUR 2016) is a new summer school to be held at University of Verona from September 5th to 9th. COSUR 2016 is jointly organized by the Altair Robotics Lab at University of Verona, the European project MURAB (MRI and Ultrasound Robotic Assisted Biopsy) and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Technical Committee on Robotic Surgery, and funded by the IEEE RAS, the MURAB project, and the Doctoral Program in Computer Science of the University of Verona.

COSUR 2016 focuses on the control and sensing aspects of robotic surgery. Together with the basics on teleoperation algorithms, the school will address vision and image based control, to introduce students to the main concepts of surgical automation. By introducing automation in surgery, we aim at showing students how to leverage the increased accuracy of robots and medical imaging, to develop new diagnostic and therapeutical tools that can support advanced procedures.

THEMES

The main themes addressed during the school include:
- Control and Sensing in robotic surgery
- Teleoperation and Haptics
- Image-guided robotic surgery and interventions
- Human-Robot Interaction and Cooperation
- Partially autonomous tasks in robotic surgery

Besides the technical aspects, the speakers of the school will present the medical context in which
robotic surgery is being used and the research perspective given by relevant EU-funded projects.
The school will include tutorial presentations on the technical topics, medical application
described by surgeons, and new research areas presented by the coordinators of EU-projects. These
lectures will be complemented by laboratory sessions that will let students apply the concept
introduced during the lectures in a laboratory set-up.
Students will be grouped in teams that will develop a project related to the school topics during
the last days of the school. The projects will be evaluated by the school lecturers and each student
will receive a certificate of attendance, to obtain credits in his/her university.

The students of the school will have the opportunity to present the results of their team projects
at the CRAS workshop in a dedicated poster session, if they will register with a reduced COSUR2016
registration fee.

x. IEEE Young professional event at RTSi 2016

Dear YP,

This is to inform you that IEEE Italy Section is going to organize a YP event
within the "2nd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society
and Industry (RTSI 2016)".

This is a forum jointly organized by IEEE Italy section and University of
Bologna, which is running at University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy on 7-9 Sept
2016 (http://rtsi16.apice.unibo.it/xwiki/bin/view/RTSI2016/).

The YP event is a "Poster and Demo Session"
(http://rtsi16.apice.unibo.it/xwiki/bin/view/RTSI2016/YPEvent) that is focused
on YP and will be mainly devoted to show innovative prototype implementations,
systems and technologies.

Demos can be considered as real, practical, and interactive proof of the
presenters' research ideas and scientific or engineering contributions, with the
goal of offering YP the opportunity to discuss systems, applications,
prototypes, or proofs-of-concept with Senior researchers and people from
industry.

All demo submissions will be automatically subscribed to the "YP Demo
competition". An evaluation committee will view and score posters/demos and
select one for Best Demo Award. Demos will be primarily judged on originality,
execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. The 500 € prize is
sponsored by the IEEE Italy Section.

The deadline to submit proposals is May 15, 2016. If you are considering to

x. SHERPA SUMMER SCHOOL ON FIELD ROBOTICS
Centro “Bruno Crepaz”, Passo Pordoi, Italy June 20-24 2016

The SHERPA Summer School 2016 is a five-day course to provide participants with a full overview of major aspects and research activities concerning robotics in search and rescue scenarios. The school is primarily directed to PhD and Postdoc students whose research interests are in robotics.

The school will touch many topics that play a role in designing an effective robotic platform operating in search and rescue scenarios, such as:

Software and functional robotic architectures for S&R
Technologies in S&R robotics
Mixed-initiative cooperative systems
Multimodal interaction
Sensor fusion in robotics
Simultaneous localization and mapping
Navigation and low-level control
The school is organized in the context of the FP7 European Project SHERPA (http://www.sherpaproject.eu/) whose goal is to develop a mixed ground and aerial robotic platform to support search and rescue activities in a real-world hostile environments like the alpine scenario. Demonstration of SHERPA technologies is also planned during the week.

Applications should be submitted via email to Lorenzo Marconi (lorenzo.marconi@unibo.it) before April 30. All applicants must provide a free format letter (max. 1 page) describing their research and a motivation for attending the school.

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 50. If more applications are received, participants will be selected according to the following criteria:

Priority will be given to PhD and Postdoc students not belonging to the Universities partner of SHERPA;
Balancing between nationalities;
Work area, background and motivations as described in the submitted letter;
Date of application submission.
Notification of acceptance will be sent on May 2. The final registration deadline is May 15.

The registration fee is 400 € and covers participation to the Summer school, full board and lodging from Sunday June 19 afternoon to Saturday June 25 morning in local structures. The costs refer to accommodation in double or triple rooms. Registration payment details will be sent on acceptance of participation.

A transportation service will be organized for the students from the train station of Bolzano to the location of the school (Passo Pordoi) on Sunday June 19 afternoon. A return transportation service will be also organized on Saturday April 25 morning. The cost is included in the registration fee. Details will be sent on acceptance of participation.

The school will be held in the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) Training Centre "Bruno Crepaz" (http://www.caiveneto.it/crepaz/). The center is located on the Passo Pordoi, 2.239 AMSL in the heart of the Dolomites. Students are accommodated in the nearby hotels Savoia (www.savoiahotel.net) and Col di Lana (www.coldilana.it). The IEEE RAS Summer School on Multi-Robot Systems (MRSSS 2016) is a new summer school to be held at National University of Singapore over five days in tropical Singapore, from 6-10 June 2016. MRSSS 2016 is jointly organized by the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) from the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) of Singapore, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Multi-Robot Systems, and supported and funded by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS).

Multi-robot systems research is an area of increasing interest within IEEE RAS and has the potential to bring about profound economic and social benefits. The Summer School aims to promote multi-robot systems research that will enable the students, academic researchers, and industrial practitioners to realize its growing need in our society to improve our quality of life and the exciting possibilities surrounding its use in real-world application domains, as well as raise their awareness to the challenges and issues faced by the multi-robot systems community in putting theory into practice and scaling up single-robot algorithms to that for multiple robots.

THEMES

The main technical objective of the School is to cover the motivation driving research in multi-robot systems, existing projects and results, and open research problems in key areas of multi-robot systems. Underlying research topics include (1) sensing/perception and estimation, (2) task allocation and role assignment, (3) control, (4) planning and decision making, and (5) real-world applications.

x. MESAS 2016 abstract submission deadline (Lucia Pallottino)

NATO M&S COE requests all interested researchers and technicians of academic, industrial or military research centers to send an abstract to be evaluated by members of MESAS'16 Technical Program Committee. Authors of approved abstracts will be asked to prepare a full paper following the Springer template, then to present the paper during the MESAS'16 Workshop.

Presentations will be ran in plenary and parallel sessions. Full papers selected by the Scientific Committee will be Included in the post conference proceedings indexed in the ISI Conference Proceedings Citation Indes – Science (CPCI-S) and EI Engineering Index (Compendex and Inspec databases)
